Pocket doors are popular in Parkland for a good reason, they save floor space and look great in modern open-concept builds. But they have one persistent problem nobody warned you about: in Florida humidity, wood doors swell against the frame, get sticky, and eventually jump the track. Here's why it happens and how we fix it.

The Three Causes of Pocket Door Failure

1. Humidity swelling. Wood doors absorb moisture from the air. When relative humidity hits 70%+ during Parkland's wet season (May, October), a 36-inch hollow-core door can swell up to 1/16" in width, enough to bind against the frame or the pocket cavity walls.

2. Hardware wear. Pocket door wheels and trolleys are tiny, often plastic or steel-on-steel without bearings. A door used 10x a day for 5 years has 18,000+ cycles on hardware rated for maybe 25,000. Once a wheel develops a flat spot the door starts dragging, then jumping the track.

3. Frame settling. South Florida homes settle on sandy soil. Even 1/4" of out-of-level on the door header means the pocket door has to climb a slight hill in one direction, accelerating wear.

DIY Checks Before You Call

Check 1. Does it stick in one specific spot, or all the way along the slide? Stuck-in-one-spot usually means worn hardware. Sticking throughout means humidity swelling. Mixed = both.

Check 2. Look at the top of the door, can you see the track and wheels? If you see one wheel sitting at a different angle than the other, the trolley is shot.

Check 3. Does the door close flush against the jamb on one side but not the other? That's frame-out-of-square, often from settling.

What Fixes Actually Last in Florida

Most quick fixes don't last, planing the door to fit smaller works for 6 months until winter humidity drops and the gap is huge. Better options: pocket door repair with humidity-resistant trolley swaps (we use Johnson 1500 hardware which handles FL humidity better than spec). For new builds, pocket door installation during the dry season (Nov, April) gives the door 6 months to acclimate before the wet season hits.

Pocket Doors vs Sliding Doors in Parkland Homes

If your master suite has a pocket door to the bathroom, those are the hardest-used pocket doors in any house, 10+ cycles a day in a high-humidity room. We see more pocket door failures from master baths than anywhere else.
